Mold Toxicity Summit; Outline of Presentation by Amy Myers MD

  1. Mold, Mycotoxins, Autoimmunity & Thyroid Disease often due to combination of
    1. Diet
    1. Leaky Gut
    1. Toxins
    1. Stress
    1. Infections
    1. Folks can present with completely different symptoms for reach of the above
    1. 3 factors involved in autoimmunity development 3-legged stool
      1. Genetics
      1. Intestinal permeability/leaky gut as a precursor to
        1. autoimmunity,
        1. cancer,
        1. “leaky brain” (BBB),
        1. dementia
      1. Trigger
        1. 5 items above
    1. Mold/Autoimmune/Thyroid-all related/connected
      1. Some mycotoxins can cause leaky gut/increased intestinal permeability
      1. Mycotoxins can depress/suppress immune system
      1. Histamine can be triggered by toxic mold
      1. Primary Symptoms
        1. Histamine related
          1. Mold Allergy vs. complex immunologic dysfunction
          1. Respiratory symptoms
          1. Rashes/eczema
        1. Animals, Children can be susceptible/more susceptible to mycotoxins
        1. Leaky gut, digestive disorders
        1. Mood/mind/brain stuff
        1. Neurologic disorders, neurodegenerative is common
        1. Children with ADD/ADHD
        1. Not everybody in the house will be sick, and those who are sick will have totally different presentations
          1. Also, some folks just “don’t want to deal with it”
        1. Different mycotoxins/bldg’s may cause different symptoms in the same person
          1. May be part of the “total toxic burden”
      1. Testing; (accuracy can be an issue; do you feel better when you leave a given area?)
        1. Your body knows best
        1. Testing without provocation may not be accurate
          1. Some folks cannot mobilize toxins without glutathione (GSH) or other provocations
        1. ERMI/HERTSMI to test bldg.
        1. Mycotox to test yourself
        1. Triiodothyronine (T3) tells the mitochondrial to burn oxygen
        1. Mitochondrial function
          1. GPL OATS
          1. VO2 Max testing
        1. Shoemaker Protocol labs
          1. Testing may be needed to convince another party
            1. Spouse
            1. Employer
            1. Insurer
        1. Mold vs. Lyme
          1. Testing
          1. Symptom overlap
          1. Some folks have both
          1. Lyme
            1. Comes and goes, the organism has a life cycle
            1. More neurologic aspects that are asymmetrical
          1. Mold
            1. “I feel bad every day” consistently as long as they are in the environment that is suspect
            1. More immunosuppression from mycotoxins
              1. A head injury/TBI can really cause mold illness to
                1. Worsen
                1. Accelerate
                1. Greater susceptibility to initial insult
            1. Glutathione challenge can help provoke mycotoxin release
              1. Another approach would be ensuring adequate toxin clearance
                1. Lymphatics
                1. Cleanses to ensure adequate filtration/excretion capacity
        1. Diet
          1. What can you tolerate?
            1. What works for you?
            1. Environment is probably more important than diet
              1. You may be able to tolerate other things in a month
          1. Autoimmune
            1. The Myers Way
            1. Modified Paleo diet
              1. Bone broth
              1. L-Glutamine
              1. High-quality animal protein
              1. No grains
              1. No legumes
              1. No dairy
          1. Candida
            1. Often present with mycotoxins
            1. Lower carb diet-ketotic state not necessary
              1. Carbs are necessary for the adrenals
          1. Mycotoxin
            1.  Leaky Gut
