Mold Toxicity Summit; Outline of Presentation by Annie Hopper
- Wired for Healing Limbic System
Retraining
- Rewiring the brain can help many chronic illnesses
- Hopper’s
background;
- Chronically ill
herself
- 2004 Core Belief Counselor then moved into moldy sick bldg. and office was next to janitor’s closet with numerous chemicals
- Had MVA/whiplash just prior to moving to WDB
- Illness progressed
- Insomnia, muscle tremors/twitching, chronic pain in muscles and joints
- Sensitivity to multiple chemicals and smells
- Escalated to
anything scented
- Hard to navigate world
- Violent reactions to small amts of stimuli
- Seizures when exposed to certain chemicals
- Fibromyalgia
- Multiple chemical sensitivity
- EMF sensitivity
- Couldn’t
participate in her world anymore.
- Often head injury increases susceptibility to environmental issues
- Brain can’t handle
slight toxic insults after trauma
- Histamine is often involved
- EMF affects us energetically
- Became homeless,
spent time camping,
- Knew her brain was
involved
- Not interpreting information properly
- Sense of smell was incredibly heightened
- Smelled like she
was being poisoned by everything in her environment
- Perfume felt/smelled like bug spray
- Distorted
- Suspected limbic
involvement at root of brain impairment
- Certain stimuli
would cause “brain freeze”
- Loss of voice
- Expressive dysphasia
- Certain stimuli
would cause “brain freeze”
- Brain felt
inflamed/brain fog/not working right
- No longer the person she used to be
- As a counselor, looked for patterns that disrupted her client’s path to success/happiness
- Was really good at it
- Knew her brain was
involved
- Feeling patterns
had changed as well as thought patterns
- Brain kept circulating trauma
- Became very
depressed/formerly extroverted, joyful, energetic
- C/W limbic injury
- Chronically ill
herself
- Neuroplasticity;
the brain is capable of change
- It’s changing all the time
- Affected by many
things
- Can be changed for the positive or negative
- Any trauma can
cause limbic changes
- Physical
- Psychological
- Bacterial
- Virus
- Emotional
- The Perfect Storm
- Traumas’ can become cumulative
- Creates new neural
pathways
- Primitive limbic brain can become hard-wired because of neuroplasticity and become stuck in the “on” position
- We need to re-wire to stop the neural entanglement
- Limbic-midbrain/hippocampus/hypothalamus/amygdala
- Filters sensory and emotional information
- Categorizes
information
- Threats
- Non-Threats
- With trauma, can
make mistakes on threat/nonthreat
- Needs to be fixed; “unstuck”
- Need to get the brain out of the “fight or flight” (sympathetic) into the healing (parasympathetic) state.
- Being sick for a
long period of time is traumatic by itself
- Add the fact that it’s an unknown unrecognized trauma magnifies that trauma
- Limbic system is
charged with survival
- Helping to protect ourselves
- Involved in hormone control as well.
- DNRS training
Dynamic Neural Retraining System
- Changes the sympathetic (fight or flight) response
- Teaches the brain to go back to the relaxed, regulated (Parasympathetic) state where it can properly regulate itself and the autonomic nervous system appropriately
- Ends sympathetic
dominance
- Everything just calms down
- Body takes cues from that effect in the brain
- Sympathetic has a
profound effect on hormone balance affecting
- Infertility
- Digestion
- Waste elimination
- Detoxification
- Need to first
become aware of how this impairment is expressing in your life and your
physical body
- Sensory sensitivity
- Lack energy
- Hormone dysregulation
- Chronic pain
- Thought pattern
effects of sympathetic/lens of fear/threat
- Protective mechanism has gone rogue, affects thinking/feeling
- Need to interrupt those abnormal patterns moment to moment in thoughts/feelings
- Takes a minimum of 6 months to correct this
- Need to recognize/appreciate the brains involvement in this problem.
- Even after
original insult is treated, the brain may still be in the abnormal sympathetic
system
- Need to recognize this
- Also need to note the moment to moment indicators that the brain is stuck in the abnormal pattern
- Pathways to the Past tell you the brain is stuck
- Step by step
exercises change structure and function of the brain
- Takes at least an
hour a day,
- Speech
- Movement
- Visualization
- Focuses on
changing brain structurally and chemically
- Stop production of stress hormones
- Kick the CAN
- Cortisol
- Adrenalin
- Norepinephrine
- Get into a neurochemical state to allow shift
- Need to increase
release of
- Dopamine
- Oxytocin
- Serotonin
- Endorphins
- (get your daily dose)
- Incremental
training/neural re-shaping
- Desensitizes the limbic system to these stimuli that are not really threatening
- Elevating
emotional state throughout the day
- We have a natural negativity bias
- We look for threats more than for what is going well
- An old protective mechanism
- Negativity bias can be magnified; we need to look at the world through a different lens to decrease negativity bias and the associated neurochemicals
- The brain gets used to a specific chemical cocktail that may need to be changed.
- Recognize that there is a problem
- Recognize pathways to the past
- Start the
exercises to correct the brain
- Moving the body in a gentle way
- Rewires the brain/sensitivities
- Move out of the chronic negative loop/stop perseverating
- Takes at least an
hour a day,
- Some exercises need to be done daily but can be broken up into 15 minute segments
- Curious observer
- Watch your thought patterns
- An all-day thing
- It takes way more
energy to be sick than to do DNRS
- Mindfulness
- Gratitude
- Focusing on the positive
- To learn DNRS DVD
instructional set available
- 5-day interactive seminars are available
- Vagus nerve
- Takes cues from brain on level of safety
- Parasympathetic in nature
- Doesn’t work well
in sympathetic state
- Vagus cannot function correctly in this state
- “Tired but wired”
- Has afferents and
efferents/incoming and outgoing activities
- “First brain” in the
- Gut-brain connection
- Regulates hormones
- Vagal nerve
exercises can help
- “infinity knot” follow fingernail, slowly first one then the other upper extremity, then with lower extremity
- Gargle
- Gargle while reciting ABC’s, or singing
- Activates the vagus, tears in the eyes lets you know it’s being stimulated
- Activates both sides of the brain
- Improves CNS parasympathetic tone.
- Cellular level
- Cells go into hibernation during periods of stress/danger
- Poor nutrient absorption and function
- May be a result of
limbic impairment
- May be healthy short-term, not long-term
- Stress affects us to the cellular level.
- Parasympathetic state needed for healing
- Decrease the
load/trauma/toxins etc.
- Then change the brain
- This lets the body repair
- Changes can occur
within a few weeks
- Feel different
- Thought patterns change
- Emotional state
changes
- More hope
- More energy
- Less sensitivities
- MCS
- EMF
- Continue for a minimum of 6 months
- Recovery
trajectory may not be linear, but it’s still happening
- Plateaus are possible, to be expected, don’t be discouraged
- There may be initial resistance to healing…
- Be patiently persistent
- It takes time for new neural pathways to form and grow in the brain
